Assessing the structural soundness of a key piece of Portsmouth’s infrastructure.
Opened in May, 1942, Portsmouth’s Eastern Road Bridge is an integral part of the city’s road network. As well as being a key traffic highway, the bridge contains a network of Openreach fibreoptic cables that form the foundation of Portsmouth’s internet infrastructure. Over eight decades on from opening – and a century since construction began – corrosion of the Bridge’s steel ducts has resulted in rusty metal breaking away and entering the water. We were commissioned by Kier Construction Group to undertake a visual inspection of the bridge and carry out a full structural survey to ascertain the extent of the issue. Taking a catamaran out of Hayling Island, we were able to gain access to the underside of the bridge where the 12 steel ducts are located. The visit was timed for high tide to allow us to get as close to the structure as physically possible.
We carried out a full visual inspection and structural survey of the ducts, part of which included identifying where the live cables are positioned. This was important to establish as the cables will have to remain live during any future restoration works. We were also able to make recommendations for how the ducts could be upgraded and the associated costs. Thanks to our team, Kier Construction Group now have the technical insight to make an informed decision about the extent of improvement works required and the cost of carrying out this essential maintenance.
